Patient stories from all over Ireland.

I had struggled with my weight since I was a teenager. I'd been on every diet out there, joined every slimming club, various exercise classes and even tried hypnosis. With each passing year my weight went up and eventually the health complications started creeping in.

My GP and an endocrinologist I was seeing for a hormone imbalance both agreed that bariatric surgery would significantly increase my chances of getting my weight to a healthy level and improving my overall health. They both recommended Mr. William Robb.

Eleven months after my gastric bypass and I have lost over 9 stone! Caring for my 5 year old son has become much easier. I am off all medication that I had been on before the operation. I've gone from a size 24/26 to a size 14 and I can now buy clothes I like as opposed to buying what is in my size.

I have NO regrets about having Gastric Bypass.
I first saw Mr. Robb in August 2017 and I immediately got a very good feeling from him. He explained the different types of bariatric surgery available to me and which one he thought would be most effective based on my history. I found the multidisciplinary approach very good and it helped me to make an informed decision about going forward and having the surgery.

On November 18 2017 I became the first patient in Ireland to undergo robotic gastric bypass surgery. I was in the Blackrock clinic for 3 days post-surgery where I received the best care and attention I could have asked for from all the nursing staff.

The post-op follow up care has also been excellent and I have received great advice from Mr. Robb, the medical team and from Emer on all aspects of my weight loss journey.

The surgery has given me a new outlook on life and most importantly I am able to do activities with my 5-year-old son that I could not do before bariatric surgery due to serious health issues. Since having gastric bypass all my pre-existing health issues have been corrected and I am off all medication.
Having been a ‘serial dieter’ most of my adult life I became truly despondent in my never ending battle with obesity. I was all too well aware of the huge risks associated with my obesity, however I never could seem to really crack it.

Mr Robb explained the bariatric surgical process in a gentle, simple and incredibly understanding manner. I was already attending a weight management programme so he advised me to continue with this while I considered the option of Bariatric surgery.

To say that this is the best decision that I have ever made is perhaps the most honest comment I can make.

The ongoing support and follow up has been tremendous and very reassuring to know you only need to pick up the phone and there is always someone there to assist. I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Robb and his multidisciplinary team for Bariatric surgery.

I have lost 56kgs in 11 months which is just wonderful. My newfound energy, confidence and enthusiasm for life would never have been possible without my surgery.

And for that I am eternally grateful …I should have done this years ago.

On my 51st Birthday I weighed 144kg, that’s 22st 6lbs. A BMI of 46. I was developing blood pressure issues and was borderline diabetic.

I wasn’t walking anymore - I was shuffling. I think probably the worst was the mortification of having to ask an air hostess for a seatbelt extension.

Having been introduced to some former triple XL’s abroad who had had various gastric surgeries, and seen how much weight they had lost, I secured a consultation with William Robb M.D., F.R.C.S.I. (Gen Surg).

William Robb was informative, gentle and refreshingly non-judgemental. He went through the qualification procedures for surgery, and the pros and cons of the operation. He also informed me that the operation could be covered by my VHI plan.

Nine months after surgery I had lost 9 stone, 39% of my body weight and my BMI was 28. Not everything went to plan with the operation but that only went to prove that William Robb and the Blackrock team are fantastic and genuinely caring.

This operation saved my life.
