The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery has been around for many years and is regarded as the gold standard weight loss surgery.
During Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, the stomach is divided to create a small pouch – roughly the size of an egg. Then, an opening is created between the stomach and small intestine. The surgeon then creates a second connection between the limbs of the small intestine. Food enters the small gastric pouch and then bypasses a section of the small intestine that absorbs calories and nutrients.
This means that your stomach is smaller, making you feel fuller than before. However, your body also absorbs fewer calories and nutrients, so you are required to take vitamin and mineral supplements after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.
You can expect to lose around 70% of your excess body weight within 12 to 18 months of your surgery. If you have severe acid reflux, Roux-en-Y surgery is a great surgical option as it provides weight loss and cures acid reflux. Many of the medical conditions associated with obesity will either completely resolve or greatly improve after bypass surgery.
