Robotic surgery at Blackrock WeightCare

At Blackrock WeightCare we perform bariatric weight loss surgery using the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical platform.

Minimally invasive weight loss surgery using Robotic surgical technology

Blackrock WeightCare has established the first robotic surgery programme for weight loss in Ireland. Robotic surgery enables your weight loss surgeon to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery harnessing the latest technology and with more precision than traditional laparoscopic surgery.

At Blackrock WeightCare we utilise the da Vinci Xi robotic platform. This is an advanced robotic surgical system that allows your surgeon to have an enhanced 3 dimensional, high-definition and magnified view of the surgical area.

At Blackrock WeightCare, we want you to have the best technology available for your bariatric surgery, which is why we use robotic surgery. We understand that deciding to have an operation is a big deal, and we’re serious about achieving the best results possible for all of our patients.

Our multidisciplinary team at Blackrock WeightCare are bariatric surgery specialists and we’re here and ready to answer every question you have. Your Health. We Care.

What happens during robotic surgery?

It is important to note that a robot does not perform your surgery – your surgeon does, using robotic technology to assist him.

Your surgeon is responsible for all surgical manoeuvres and movements. Your surgeon sits at a console that gives him a high resolution 3D image of the surgery taking place. The state of the art robotic and computer technologies scale, filter and translate your surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movement into micro-movements of the da Vinci Xi robotic instruments.

What are the benefits of this surgery?

Minimally invasive robotic surgery means that your surgeon will create a number of small incisions in your abdominal area. Then, a camera allows the surgeon to see inside the abdominal cavity. This has multiple benefits, as the small incisions are only between 8 and 10mm in size and results in less scarring. Your pain levels will be reduced and your recovery time will be quicker, due to the minimal amount of trauma you go through.

Other benefits for patients include:

  • Smaller incisions compared to traditional open surgeries
  • Significant pain reduction
  • Less scarring
  • Less blood loss
  • Shortened hospital stay
  • Quicker recovery

There are also benefits for the surgeon:

  • A magnified 3D view of the surgical area
  • Improved dexterity of surgical instruments used
  • Greater surgical precision for internal dissection and making of connections
  • Increased range of motion
