Mr William Robb

Consultant Upper GI & Robotic Bariatric Surgeon

Ireland | Northern Ireland | United Kingdom

Mr William Robb M.D., F.R.C.S.I. is one of Europe’s most experienced robotic surgeons and a leading authority in minimally invasive metabolic surgery. He has performed over 1,500 robotic surgical operations and has cared for more than 1500 weight loss surgery patients from Ireland, Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Mr Robb’s studied at Trinity College Dublin, where he graduated in 2000 before completing advanced surgical training in Ireland. His surgical development included:

  • A fellowship in Digestive Disease Oncology at CHRU Lille, France, one of Europe’s busiest centres for minimally invasive upper gastrointestinal surgery.
  • Further specialist training and practice in leading surgical units in Switzerland, England, France and Portugal, particularly in advanced and robotic techniques.
  • Appointment as a Consultant Surgeon at the Bristol Royal Infirmary in 2013, where he delivered high-volume surgical care before returning to Dublin in 2015.

His structured training across international high-volume centres has equipped him with a broad and deep skill set in complex upper GI and bariatric surgery.

Leader in Robotic Bariatric Surgery

Robotic surgery is not just technology — it is an extension of surgical expertise. With robotic platforms such as the da Vinci Xi surgical robot and the new dV5 robotic platform, Mr Robb operates with enhanced vision, precision and control. This is especially valuable in patients with higher BMI and complex anatomy.

Robotic bariatric surgery offers advantages, including:

  • Magnified 3D high-definition visuals for the surgeon
  • Improved dexterity for precise tissue handling
  • Greater control in deep abdominal spaces

Potentially lower complication rates and faster recovery

Under Mr Robb’s leadership, Ireland’s first robotic weight loss surgery programme was established at Blackrock Clinic – and he now welcomes surgeons from across the UK and Europe to train in robotic bariatric techniques.

Introducing Advanced Procedures: SADI-S in Ireland

William is the first surgeon to bring the SADI-S procedure (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve) to Ireland — a powerful metabolic surgery designed for patients with severe obesity (BMI 45+) and complex metabolic disease. Few centres across the UK and Europe offer this operation choice to their patients. It is an operation greatly facilitated by his experience with robotic surgery.

SADI-S combines restrictive and metabolic mechanisms and is especially effective for:

  • Patients with BMI 50–70+
  • Individuals with long-standing type 2 diabetes
  • Patients seeking strong long-term weight loss
  • Cases where previous surgery (e.g., sleeve) delivered sub-optimal results

Mr Robb has personally supported an ever-growing number of high BMI patients through transformational change with SADI-S — helping them regain health, mobility and long-term metabolic control.

Research, Leadership and Professional Recognition

Mr Robb is a surgeon committed to advancing bariatric and upper GI surgery through research and global collaboration:
  • Author of over 75 peer-reviewed scientific publications in high-impact journals.
  • Contributor of book chapters on upper gastrointestinal surgery and presented widely at both international and national surgical meetings
  • He is also a proctor with Intuitive Surgical and trains, mentors and collaborates with surgeons learning robotic bariatric surgery
  • Member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) and the European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ESDE).

His research and teaching continue to influence surgical practice internationally.
