Understanding BMI and Eligibility for Bariatric Surgery

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is in a healthy range. It’s a useful tool to assess whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese, which can help in evaluating your health risks related to weight issues.

While BMI gives us some idea of weight status, the relationship between health and weight is not straightforward. This means that some patients may develop health related complications from their weight at a much lower BMI while other patients can have a higher BMI and not have developed health related complications.

Eligibility for Bariatric Surgery in Ireland

Bariatric surgery is a medical intervention to treat the chronic medical condition of obesity. It is considered for individuals who have not been able to achieve or maintain healthy weight loss through diet and exercise alone.

In Ireland, eligibility criteria for bariatric surgery typically include:

    BMI Criteria
    • A BMI of 40 or above, regardless of the presence of health related complications developed as a consequence of obesity.
    • A BMI of 35 or above with one or more obesity-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension or sleep apnea.
    • Typically, candidates should be between the ages of 18 and 65, although exceptions can be made based on an individual health assessment.
    • Candidates should be physically and mentally prepared for surgery and the lifestyle changes that follow.
    • Demonstrated history of unsuccessful attempts to lose weight through non-surgical means such as diet, exercise, and medication.

    Why Consider Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery is not simply about weight loss; rather it is about health gain and improving quality of life.

For those who qualify, it can lead to very significant weight loss and help resolve or improve many obesity-related medical conditions. This can result in a longer, healthier life and a greater ability to enjoy activities and experiences that were once limited by weight.
