Skin removal surgery can be an important next step for some people following substantial weight loss. Procedures such as an abdominoplasty, lower body lift, thigh lift or arm lift remove excess skin and reshape areas that have changed considerably after weight loss.

Naturally, much of the discussion before surgery is about the procedure itself and the result a patient hopes to achieve.

Recovery deserves just as much attention.

Skin removal surgery can involve longer incisions and larger areas of tissue than many other plastic surgery procedures. These wounds need time, appropriate care and regular review to heal well. This is particularly relevant following bariatric surgery, where nutrition and previous health conditions may also influence recovery.

Good wound care is therefore not simply about changing a dressing. It begins before the operation and continues until healing is complete.

Why can wound healing take time after skin removal surgery?

Removing a significant amount of excess skin creates a larger surgical wound than patients may have experienced with their bariatric operation.

Some swelling, bruising and discomfort are expected during recovery. Small areas of delayed healing can also occur, particularly where there is greater tension on the wound.

Research looking specifically at body contouring following bariatric surgery shows that wound-related problems are among the more common complications after these procedures. Most reported complications are minor, but they can still require additional dressings, wound reviews or more time to heal.

This is one reason we prefer patients to know about wound care before surgery. A patient who understands what normal recovery looks like is also better placed to recognise when something has changed.

Healing starts before the operation

One of the most important parts of wound care happens before there is a wound at all.

Patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery can develop deficiencies in protein, iron, vitamins and minerals. These may not always cause obvious symptoms, but some are important for tissue repair and wound healing.

Pre-operative assessment therefore matters.

Blood tests may be required, and nutritional deficiencies should be identified and addressed where possible. Adequate protein intake is particularly important around body contouring surgery. Research in post-bariatric patients has also highlighted anaemia and nutritional status among the factors relevant to wound healing.

This is where continuity between bariatric care and plastic surgery can be valuable. The weight loss journey and the skin removal operation should not be viewed as completely separate episodes of care.

What happens to the wound when you go home?

Leaving hospital does not mean that wound care has finished.

Depending on the procedure, patients may go home with dressings and, in some cases, drains. Instructions will be provided on showering, movement, activity and looking after the operated area.

The early days are generally about protecting the wound while gradually getting mobile again.

Patients should avoid trying to judge their recovery against somebody else’s. An arm lift is different from a lower body lift, and two people having the same procedure may still heal at different rates.

What matters is that progress is monitored.

What should you look out for?

Nobody wants to spend their recovery worrying about every change around an incision. Equally, patients should know when it is sensible to contact their clinical team.

Increasing redness, worsening pain, unusual discharge, an unpleasant smell, a wound beginning to open, increasing swelling or feeling generally unwell should be reported.

Fluid collections can also occur after body contouring procedures. A collection of clear fluid beneath the skin is known as a seroma and is a recognised complication following body contouring surgery.

Finding a wound problem does not necessarily mean that something has gone seriously wrong. Many wound issues can be managed with appropriate dressings and review. The important point is to have access to the team caring for you rather than trying to manage a concern alone.

Why aftercare makes a difference

Patients often ask about the surgeon, the operation and how long they will be in hospital. It is equally worth asking a very practical question:

What happens if my wound needs attention two or three weeks later?

At Blackrock WeightCare, aftercare is built into the body contouring pathway. Patients have planned follow-up with their plastic surgeon, access to wound reviews and dressing clinic support, and specialist nursing care where required. Additional review can be arranged according to how recovery is progressing rather than relying on the same schedule for every patient.

This becomes particularly valuable when healing takes a little longer than expected.

The aim is not to promise that wound problems will never happen. They are a recognised part of skin removal and body contouring surgery. Good care means preparing properly, reducing avoidable risks and having a clear plan if a wound does need additional attention.

The operation may take hours. Healing takes longer.

Skin removal surgery does not finish when a patient leaves theatre.

Nutrition, dressings, sensible activity, follow-up and knowing when to contact the clinical team all contribute to recovery. For patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery, nutritional monitoring can be particularly important.

This is why the team looking after you after surgery matters as much as the planning that happens beforehand.

At Blackrock WeightCare, patients undergoing body contouring and skin removal surgery are supported through a structured aftercare pathway, including follow-up with the plastic surgery team, wound care and dressing clinic support until healing is complete.
