The Answer Most Patients Don’t Know

When patients first enquire about weight loss surgery at Blackrock WeightCare, one of the first questions they ask is about cost. And one of the first things that surprises them is the answer: if you have private health insurance in Ireland and you meet the clinical criteria, there is a strong chance your surgery is already covered.

This is, as one of our own blog posts has noted, something of a hidden secret. Many patients assume bariatric surgery is an out-of-pocket expense — a luxury or an elective procedure. In reality, it is a clinically indicated medical treatment for a serious chronic condition, and Ireland’s three main insurers — VHI, Laya Healthcare, and Irish Life Health — all include bariatric surgery under qualifying plans at approved hospitals including Blackrock Clinic.

What Are the Eligibility Criteria?

Irish health insurers generally follow internationally recognised clinical guidelines when assessing eligibility for bariatric surgery. While specific requirements vary by insurer and plan, the typical criteria are:

Standard Clinical Eligibility Criteria

BMI of 40 or above— regardless of other health conditions

BMI of 35 or abovewith at least one significant obesity-related comorbidity such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease

Evidence of previous attemptsat non-surgical weight management

No contraindicationsto bariatric surgery — assessed through pre-operative evaluation

Psychological suitability— assessed by a psychologist as part of the pre-operative programme

Age typically18–65 years, though assessment is made case by case

Insurers may also require a minimum waiting period on the policy before a claim for planned surgical procedures can be made. This is known as a waiting period and typically applies to new policies. If you are on an existing policy and have not previously made a claim for bariatric surgery, this waiting period may already have passed.

Which Procedures Are Covered?

The most commonly covered procedures at Blackrock WeightCare include:

Gastric Sleeve (Sleeve Gastrectomy)

Covered under qualifying plans with all three major insurers. The most commonly performed bariatric procedure in Ireland, accounting for the majority of weight loss operations.

Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)

Covered under qualifying plans. Particularly relevant for patients with type 2 diabetes, where bypass has the strongest evidence for long-term remission.

SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve)

A more complex procedure for patients with higher BMI or where maximum metabolic benefit is required. Cover is plan-specific — our team will verify.

Revisional Bariatric Surgery

For patients who have had a previous bariatric procedure and require revision. Cover varies more significantly — we will assess your specific situation.

What If My Policy Doesn’t Cover Surgery?

If your current plan does not include bariatric surgery, there are options. Upgrading your policy to a higher-tier plan may include surgical cover — though waiting periods may apply to the upgraded benefits. Some patients opt to self-fund the procedure, for which Blackrock WeightCare can provide a detailed cost breakdown.

It is also worth checking whether your corporate or employer-provided health insurance includes bariatric surgery. In recent years, Ireland’s major insurers have expanded their cover for corporate clients, and many employees are unaware that their group scheme includes this benefit. Your HR department or insurance provider can confirm what your corporate plan includes.

If you have Level Health insurance and have been thinking about bariatric surgery, you may be closer to taking that step than you realise. One of the most common reasons people delay exploring weight loss surgery is uncertainty around insurance cover. Many assume it will not be included, so they never check.

In reality, Level Health policies can offer hospital cover that may allow access to bariatric surgery, depending on your plan and medical criteria. The only way to know for sure is to look at your individual policy — and that is where we can help.

Who May Be Eligible for Insurance-Supported Bariatric Surgery?

Most insurers in Ireland, including Level Health, follow international medical guidelines when assessing bariatric surgery. These usually include:

A Body Mass Index of 40 or higher

Or a Body Mass Index of 35 or higher with related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, or uncontrolled high blood pressure. If you meet these criteria, surgery may be considered medically necessary rather than elective. This is an important distinction when insurance decisions are made.

Why It Is Worth Checking Your Cover

We regularly speak with patients who are surprised to learn that their health insurance will cover bariatric surgery. Many had assumed surgery would be self-pay and had ruled it out entirely. Bariatric surgery remains the best treatment currently available for patient living the chronic disease of obesity.

Checking your Level Health cover does not commit you to surgery. It simply gives you clarity. Knowing what is covered allows you to make an informed decision, rather than one based on assumptions.

At Blackrock WeightCare, we see how often people delay life-changing treatment simply because they did not realise support might already be in place.

How Blackrock WeightCare Supports Level Health Patients

Navigating insurance can feel overwhelming, especially when you are already dealing with health concerns. Our team supports you by:

Reviewing your Level Health policy details

Advising on eligibility and next steps

Guiding you through the pre-approval process if required

Explaining any potential out-of-pocket costs clearly and honestly

Our goal is to remove uncertainty and help you understand your options, at your own pace.

A Gentle First Step

If you have Level Health insurance and bariatric surgery is something you have been thinking about, the first step does not have to be a big one. Simply understanding what your policy covers can bring a lot of clarity and peace of mind.

Taking a few minutes to check your cover can help you understand your options and decide whether this path feels right for you, now or in the future. There is no pressure and no commitment, just clear information to help you make an informed choice.

Does my private health insurance cover bariatric surgery? …. Most patients are surprised to hear the answer is YES !!

In Ireland, if you have private health insurance and you meet the general criteria in international guidelines to qualify for weight loss/metabolic/bariatric surgery, then the chances are your health insurance will cover the cost of surgery.

This seems to be a hidden secret! Many patients with health insurance continue to seek out surgery overseas rather than using the insurance they have often paid for over many years. Call us at Blackrock WeightCare and we will check your insurance coverage for you.

Requirements:

To qualify for weight loss surgery your surgeon will need to demonstrate to your insurer the following:

You have a BMI over 40,

Or have a BMI over 35 and have a serious health condition such as Type 2 Diabetes, Sleep Apnoea, or High Blood Pressure.

You have tried non-surgical weight loss methods for at least six months – but have failed to achieve or maintain that weight loss.

Qualifying for weight loss surgery – often the most successful treatment for obesity – is simple, and in many circumstances, your insurance will pay for it! Sure, all patients have to go through a process of evaluation by our multidisciplinary team but we
make this straightforward. We are focused on giving you the best treatment for obesity – surgery. Check your BMI with our BMI Calculator HERE.

Any patient can call or email their health insurance policy number to check their coverage for the following procedure codes:

181 for Gastric Bypass

183 for Gastric Sleeve

Are you thinking of bariatric surgery? Have it at home in Ireland. Contact us for an appointment.
